Wyoming Community Coffee

Designing an Animation to Bring out the Best in a Local Community Coffee Shop

  • Client: Wyoming Community Coffee (WYCOCO)

  • Illustrator, After Effects, Premiere Pro

  • Creative Director, Illustrator, Animator, Editor

I met with the owner of Wyoming Community Coffee to find out what she wanted her current and prospective customers to know about WYCOCO. This fun animation shows that WYCOCO is no ordinary coffee shop, but a community gathering place that serves handcrafted and locally roasted coffee.

1. Script

The script was based on 5 things that the owner wanted to portray:

1. locally roasted coffee 2. handcrafted with each cup 3. the coffee shop is a community center 4. fun and local events and 5. open long hours

2. Illustrated Scenes

Photographs were taken of the coffee shop and were used as a reference for the illustrated scenes. The colors that are used in the illustration were taken from the coffee shop, as well as the modern + eclectic feel of the cafe.

3. Storyboards

The script, animation notes, and illustrated scenes were brought together to make storyboards. Once the storyboards were approved, they became my action plan for both the animation and editing.

4. Voiceover & Music

The voiceover was recorded at the downtown library in the recording studio. We chose a child’s voice because it matched the child-like animation in the video. A calm, but upbeat acoustic track was chosen for the background music. It was important to have the voiceover and music track completed before beginning the animation, so the animation would be timed to match the audio.

4. Animation

Each scene was animated in After Effects based on the storyboards and audio.

5. Compositing

The final animated scenes, voiceover, music track, and sound effects were composited and edited in Premiere Pro. Video transitions were added and audio levels were adjusted so that the voiceover could be properly heard.
